North Yorkshire, Hardwood Timber Bog Mats

Customer: National Main Contractor
Location: North Yorkshire
Timeline: Open Hire (Started April 2026)
Product: 150 Hardwood Timber Bog Mats

The conditions at this North Yorkshire site had created a bottleneck for the project. Following a period of relentless rain and poor drainage, the ground had reached a point of total saturation, leaving the terrain heavily bogged and impassable for standard equipment.

The primary challenge was the sheer weight and traction requirements of the machinery on-site. We were dealing with heavy plant and steel-tracked vehicles, which are notorious for churning up soft ground and bringing a difficult site to a complete standstill. The project couldn’t afford any more downtime, but the risk of sinking or damaging the expensive plant was too high to continue without anything serious happening.

We deployed our Hardwood Timber Bog Mats to address the severe ground conditions on site. These were selected specifically because they are the most effective countermeasure for ground that has reached this level of saturation. Unlike standard matting, the density and structural integrity of timber provide a high-load-bearing surface that effectively floats over the “bog,” ensuring the heavy plant remains stable with very risk of sinking.

Even with the right equipment, the logistics of the site in its condition required quick thinking. Upon delivery, we encountered a minor hurdle where the Hydradig clamp couldn’t gain proper purchase on the mats. Every minute of downtime would count, so, to resolve this we used a forklift to manually space out the delivery, creating the necessary clearance for the Hydradig to grab and position each mat efficiently.

Once the mats were laid, the transformation of the site was immediate. The timber provided a rugged platform that gave the steel-tracked vehicles the grip and support they needed to operate safely and get back to productive work without stalling.

Objectives

  • Support heavy-duty plant
  • Use with steel tracked vehicles
  • Solid platform over boggy ground

Installation

The team used a Hydradig to lay matting side-by-side, creating a stable trackway across the site.

Benefits

  • High load-bearing capacity
  • Protects sensitive surfaces
  • Reusable and long-lasting
  • Avoids rutting

Comments

Having these wooden mats was a game-changer, providing the stability needed to get our drivers moving across the wet site where we’d previously grounded to a complete halt.

Site Manager

The project remains ongoing, and we are pleased to report that the site is maintaining full operational momentum. Since the initial installation, there have been no issues reported by their team. Their feedback confirms that mats are performing exactly as expected, for a rock-solid foundation despite the ground conditions.

The durability of the timber has been a key factor here; even with the constant movement of machinery, the trackway has held its integrity without shifting or splintering. By eliminating the risk of bogged vehicles, the project has progressed rather than battling the elements.
