Plant and machinery support during new skate park construction
Location: Cambridgeshire
Timeline: Hire for 1 month (during 2026 Winter time)
Product: 150+ K-Mat Heavy-Duty Roadway Panels
Team: MultiMatts
One of our first projects of the year involved creating safe access for plant and machinery across a public field that’s regularly used by the local community. The project needed heavy loads and materials to be carried and then construct a communal skate park, making it particularly important that the surrounding ground remained protected throughout the works.
The project was scheduled to take place during the first month of the year so the area could reopen in time for the summer, when public use would be at its highest. Because of this, preventing damage to the grassed surface was a key priority. Any rutting, tyre marks or ground disturbance caused by machinery would have required significant restoration work and could have delayed the reopening of the space.
To avoid this, a temporary track route was required to withstand the heavy vehicles while protecting the ground beneath. K-Mats were selected as the most suitable solution for the conditions. Designed to support extreme weights, each mat was securely connected using K-Mat Metal Strap Connectors for a flush link between panels, allowing the mats to function as a single continuous platform.
The trackway created a smooth, stable surface for plant and machinery to travel across, distributing weight evenly and reducing pressure on the grass and underlying ground. This enabled the team to work efficiently while preserving the condition of the field, ensuring the site would be ready for public use once the project was complete.

Objectives
- Protect the underlying surface
- Provide reliable support for plant and machinery
Installation
Our team attended the site with clear instructions due to the sensitivity of the area. The installation was carried out with great care, using the correct tools and equipment.
Benefits
- Reliable access for plant and machinery
- Protects the ground from damage
- Less clean-up once the work is complete
- Keeps new community spaces protected
Comments
The matting protected the grassed area as our team could drive across the ground without any problems. We noticed the ground and surrounding features were protected throughout the process and that allowed the work to be completed efficiently, leaving the field ready for the public to use.
